Day 10 and 11 – Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th July 2018

Student leaders – Emmie and Lily B

Our day got off to a later start today as it was Chief John Dalziel’s (aka Nana Kofi Yeboah as he never fails to remind us) job to wake up the cheery students at 7am (such a lie in).
Breakfast consisted of bread with a selection of toppings from omelettes to chocolate spread, paired with fresh Ghanaian mango and pineapple.

Our first task as leaders was to separate the students into groups for the day – painters at both the SDA junior high and the Islamic school, water fetchers and sand bringers. As leaders we were separated with Emmie at the Islamic school and Lily at the SDA.

At the SDA, surrounded by excited children, we painted the primary school building with gloss paint, trying our best to avoid simultaneously redecorating the floors due to bad aim with the paintbrushes a few hours later, Lily stopped for a break, joining the other students and Ghanaian children to relax for a bit before heading back to the hostel. For lunch, we had spicy tomato pasta with hard boiled eggs, which we all enjoyed.

In the afternoon, after reading and relaxing for a while, the majority of students headed back to the schools. However Emmie (our resident professional painter) was out of action due to a migraine – don’t worry, she recovered! At the schools, we continued our painting with the students at SDA nearing the finishing touches of glosswork and the students at Islamic continuing their cat, dog and alphabet murals.

Ghanaian students were thrilled as we handed out dresses to the young girls and bat and ball shirts to the boys whilst they posed for photos in their new outfits.
Back at the hostel, some students headed off to see Charles the tailor, who equipped them with bright Ghanaian wardrobes, whilst others relaxed, wishing for another sweet banana that the SDA school had bought for us earlier that day.

Dinner was sticky rice balls with a peanut sauce and chicken, a new but amazing food thanks to our chefs here, after which we headed back upstairs to shower, wash our clothes and read.

Currently the boys are playing football and others are winding down, watching the sunset after a very productive day.

Love and miss you all,

Lily and Emmie
