Saturday 19th July

Bonjour!

It’s time to catch up on the last few days…

On Thursday we were rewarded for our 3 consecutive days of work with a break! We embarked on a trip (by an amaaaazing bus!) with our buddies to two cocoa farms where we tasted cocoa beans and learned more about the process of growing cocoa amongst other fruits.

We then stopped off at a Sabre School and toured the classrooms, each one of us trying to haul around the hoards of excited children hanging off of our arms.

With most of our strength drained, we arrived at our final destination: Kakum Nature Reserve. After a quick lunch break and browse around a souvenir shop, we went on a trek into a rainforest. The tour guide described multiple trees and sent us on a 7 bridge canopy walk. Many of us, including Clara, faced our fears as we hobbled across the top of the forest, unable to see the ground below. It was great!

Once home, Alice, Clara and Leah once again struggled to get into their room by jamming various keys into their dodgy lock. After 20 minutes they succeeded, deceived by the idea that they had found a working key. Leah and Clara decided to depend on their key, and locked the door, leaving Alice alone inside… that was the end of the lock! After multiple attempts to free Alice, all keys were tossed aside and the staff pulled out a machete! They mauled the lock until it finally smashed, opening the door. Later the room was fitted with a new, simpler lock, much to the relief of its residents!

Friday came and we walked back to Ankaful again. Once we arrived we went on another stroll up to the chief’s house where we presented him with Shortbread and Biscuits, and elected Leah as our queen mother.

After an informative visit, we returned to Ankaful to finish the touch ups of our mural. We also decorated the new ICT suite with the chairs and tables that we’d sanded and varnished. After awkwardly realizing that there were only 16 chairs for classes of up to 30, we decided that promoting the idea of sharing would be the best way forward.

Some of us took to the fields with our buddies where we played Frisbee, followed by an exciting and melodramatic game of rounders which we taught them to play.

Before we stayed too long to get sunburnt, we were back in the ICT suite, this time with our buddies. As Clara persevered through most of the day by finishing the ICT sign, we huddled around the working computers with our buddies – two to a chair. We guided our buddies through a word document, showing them how different icons had different functions. In the end we each created a fact file about ourselves and our buddies.

Today we woke up to a breakfast of omelettes and toast. We set off for the beach in out sunscreen and swimsuits. As soon as we arrived, most of us charged into the sea and had fun catching waves and turning Alice into a mermaid!

After games of Frisbee and volleyball, we retreated to the shade for the sunniest part of the afternoon. We ate sandwiches and browsed around the souvenir stalls.

Overall it was a pretty lazy day, but it was great to experience the African beach!
