Akwaaba Again!

Today we woke up feeling ready for another church service. We were originally going to another church which starts at 7am, but fortunately, we were allowed a little bit of a lie in and attended the service at 9am.

When we first arrived in church, we were greeted at the door with a friendly handshake like the week before. It started with singing which created an incredibly lively atmosphere. It was really very fascinating to us, with people dancing with hands in their hands in the air, almost like a club. Some men lined up with their arms over their shoulders at the front and jumped up and down. There was even a woman at one point holding a chair in the air!

Ellie and Emily found themselves sitting next to a man who was new to the church. When the bishop told us to turn to the person next to them and ask if they would be attending church next week, he was rather disappointed to find we won’t.

The service was long, it finished at 1pm! Despite how long it was, the whole new atmosphere kept us focused.

That afternoon, we went to the school and met our buddies. This was to do a drum and dance workshop. This was new to the buddies as well as us so it was not too much of a culture swap. There were two different dances to learn which were both welcome dances of different countries. One was difficult to catch on to but we felt very proud when we finally learned how to do it. The drumming also proved to be difficult and we all seemed lost but had fun drumming very hard and fast at the end.

After the workshops, our buddies started playing on the drums and singing some traditional songs they all seemed familiar with. It was very entertaining to watch.
