Nether Stowe School in Sri Lanka

Hello from Sri Lanka!
Our journey began with a flight from London to Mumbai, hosted by Jet Airways. From the start, we experienced the Sri Lankan cuisine; it’s different. Who would have known we’d have six curries in three days, even before we got to our location! We had free food and unlimited drinks on the plane, as well as an individual television with a range of movies, songs and games. Our luxurious travel didn’t really prepare us for our sleeping arrangements!
After 27 hours of travelling, and on about 3 hours of sleep, we wandered through a Sri Lankan town to experience the life here, it was incredible! We saw a monkey in orange shorts, fish and fruit markets (we tried red bananas and exotic rambutam) and dipped our feet in the Indian Ocean!
We soon realized the reality of life here when we arrived at our accommodation, if you would have watched us setting up our tents and camp beds you would not have believed we have all completed Duke of Edinburgh! We tried to embrace the culture by eating curry with our hands (we’ve learned acrylics are not ideal here!) soon, our exhaustion took over and we were in our camp beds by half past seven.
After our first night in the wild, sleeping under the stars, we woke up ready to meet the children at the Kindergarten. We were greeted by singing, flowers, and smiling faces! We soon realized the language barrier was more of a challenge than we anticipated, however a parachute and a football soon sorted this! We filled the morning with different activities with the children, colouring, games and reading.
During a short break, in which we were relaxing in the sun, we were joined by water buffalos, monkeys and local people.
After the heat became too much, we took a walk to the local Tesco’s (bants, it was a shed) but we found some amazing lemon biscuits, along with the only refrigerated drinks, coke and sprite for our daily treat! Whilst walking there, we soon realized our girl band ‘The Lankas’ were more famous than we thought, we found a large fan base in the local Sri Lankans and are thinking of touring here in 2016!
Later on, we relaxed whilst watching monkeys climbing trees as the sun set. It is incredible here!
After dinner, we had a meeting with King Karu, the don of the village, and witnessed a bat be decapitated by a fan…
Goodnight!
Missing you all loads!
Love from,
Jenny, Laura, Hannah, Kate, Katie and Ellie.
