This morning we woke up early after a long nights sleep (again to the sound of the cockerel), and finally it has stopped raining. Breakfast was due to be Banana Pancakes (Milly’s favourite) but changed last minute to fried egg on toast, which was also good. We were supposed to leave at eight thirty, but now we have gotten used to running on Ghanaian time, and some of our buddies didn’t arrive until nine thirty, however we were shortly on our way to Elmina to visit the castle.
Once we arrived in the town, we immediately experienced the crazy culture of Ghana. There were people and cars everywhere!!! It was very interesting to hear from our buddies about their opinions of the town and castle. Some had visited the castle before, but for others it was their first time as well as ours. We learnt about the history of the castle and slave trade, as well the links to Portugal, Holland and Britain.
When we got back, lunch was ready and waiting, which ended up being Banana Pancakes and Dairy Lea sandwiches. We have spent this afternoon finishing off some of our projects, which include the library and murals. Everything is starting to come together now and is starting to look really good.
For our duties we have been split into four groups, so in the morning and evening there is a short time spent on jobs. Kobby our Partner Ghana representative has said that Ellie, Ollie, Thomas and Phoebe are the best washing up group so far. Community team have had to clean the ‘toilet’ (which really isn’t very nice, but we are making the most of it).
We are looking forward to this evenings meal and another exciting evening around the campfire (providing it stays dry).
Overall everyone is having such a great time and we can’t wait to see what the rest of our trip brings.
