Day 13
We awoke knowing we had a lot to complete on the project but due to rogue carpenters we could only follow on painting the murals. In the afternoon, we took our buddies on another exciting excursion to the rainforest. Some of the buddies were petrified at the thought of them walking along a 40 metre high swinging walkway. However, with some encouragement they all made it across, albeit with a bit of screaming. We were meant to touch crocodiles after this, but due to the wet weather we could not do so. Therefore, once again we stopped at the Shell garage.
Day 14
Today was a big day work wise. We took the canteen project into our own hands. We sawed, nailed, and painted bamboo as well as finishing the murals. We hope to complete the canteen tomorrow and have the rooms ready for the closing ceremony. Before dinner, we had lessons in dancing and drumming, which included some pretty shocking “dancing” from Harry W. and Harry F. who needed extra help.
Day 15
Today was the last full day in Ankwanda. So we woke up early ready to clean the rooms for the closing ceremony. Everyone from the community seemed extremely please with our work, Harry F. also made good friends with one of the elders as he pretended to be called Steve. After the closing ceremony some of us chilled on the beach. There were some red faces after! We also got invited to dance in the middle of the community. Here, Harry F. was reunited with his friend Steve. In the evening, it was a buddies buffet and bonfire. Here we ate lots of chicken, rice, and plantain chips. We then danced around the fire.
Day 16
Today we leave Ankwanda to go on our 4 day tour around Ghana. During this trip we will camp at Lake Volta the largest man-made lake in the world. Also, the trip will include visiting a monkey sanctuary, and the largest waterfall in West Africa. Our final day will consist of shopping in Accra. Unfortunately, this will be our last blog. We’d like to say now that we have had an amazing time already and we are sure to have an emotional goodbye.
