Journey to Ayensudo – Team 2

Day 2: Saturday 1 /04/ 17 – Today we woke up at 6am Ghana time in the hostel, in Accra that we stayed in as we could not drive at night. Once woken we all went down to eat our breakfast which consisted of eggs and bread in sandwich and some pineapple which was delicious! Once breakfast was finished we all went back into our rooms to collect our back packs and money bags.. We were instructed to meet at 8 GMT (which stands for Ghana may be time as in Ghana they don’t rely on time as much as we do back in England). Eventually both teams left in different coaches for Ayensudo. The journey was a little longer than expected due to the traffic that we got stuck in while getting out of Accra. And due to there being no air conditioning on the coach when stuck in traffic it was extremely hot and sticky!

Once out of traffic and we were no longer sticky we started to focus on our surroundings instead of the heat! It was incredibly interesting to watch the Ghanaian people strive from outside the coach. We saw many different markets which were extremely vibrant and interesting. In Ghana it is normal for a citizen to walk around with different products and sell them on the side of the road while there is traffic which again was interesting to witness. Apart from Accra the other large city we drove through was Cape Coast which was a coastal town so we could see the sea and pretty much all of us wanted to jump in! In Cape Coast we exchanged our money and while doing so Harry lost his passport which caused a commotion but eventually it was found and our journey continued.

Around an hour later we arrived in Ayensudo and the second we got of the coach the Ghanaian children greeted us straight away which was overwhelming but made us all so welcomed and happy. We continued ourselves to the children by telling them our names ans asking them their names. Around 10 minutes later the Dwabor team had to leave which left just the Ayensudo team. Through out the rest of the evening we stayed and played with the children. We went to a ceremony where we met and greeted the community chief and we granted with a dance which we ended up participating. After that we played with the children by showing them different hand games and them showing us.

After setting up the tents the children had to go to their homes which left us to have dinner which consisted of rice with palava sauce which we all really enjoyed. After dinner it left us to have a group discussion and then off to bed. All in all although today was long it was defiantly enjoyable and our expectations were exceeded by the welcoming way of the Ghanaian people.
