Day 13. Thursday, 19th July 2018

Student leaders – Eleanor, Megan, Joe and Richard

Rudely awakened by a young Joe thumping on the door “Breakfast in 20,” were the first words of the day which turned out to be a lie. Then we got down to breakfast (eggy bread) and most of it was gone. So, in short, it wasn’t the best start to the day.
Regardless of bad starts, we turned things around with a successful morning at both the Islamic and SDA schools. All the artwork was finished at the Islamic school which we topped off with an emotional thank you ceremony. Meanwhile at the SDA, we managed to progress through 3 classrooms with an artistic nature.

After the tiresome toil, we continued through the day onto the sports.

Simultaneously we thrashed SDA with netball and football. Firstly with a 17-6 win in netball against an inexperienced but persevering team. The game took place on a court crafted by the volunteers themselves but the standards of the players contrasted the haphazardness of the ground. Now onto the football, the British side took place in battle for 60 enduring minutes against swift and resilient Ghanaian opponents but came out victorious in a draw that went to penalties. A special mention is awarded to an “injured” Will Jones who took part in sandals and managed to score the winning penalty that made the British triumphant.

On the way back, faint sounds of “We are the Champions,” were sung as the hungry mob approached base camp, fatigued with anticipation about what food we would be eating. On arrival, we were faced with the delightful but usual pasta and sauce. After filling ourselves with the Italian speciality, we digressed back to the SDA school for a fun but tedious afternoon of sports. The kids were energetic to say the least, borderline uncontrollable. We just about got by, supported by the authoritative Eunice, who wielded a skipping rope to keep the kids in check. We took up our positions – Joe controlling the starting line, Megan with the whistle, Eleanor keeping the scores and Richard in his natural position of catching the first kids he sees.

Prize giving was another problematic event, as the Ghanaians that didn’t win couldn’t face the fact that their best wasn’t good enough to capture the alluring kindergarten caps.

After a chaotic afternoon, the Hulme lot returned exhausted and sunburnt to a well-earned evening of relaxation.

See you soon,
Love,
Eleanor, Megan, Joe and Richard
