Day 3. Monday 9th July 2018
Phew! Finally here.
You readers are probably wondering what it is to travel through the heart of Ghana. Fear not, Ollie and Will are here to help out.
At 9am, we set off on our treacherous journey to Kwahu Tafo, on a full belly of scrumptious nosh.
Our first pit stop was at the local petrol station ( where petrol – 70p per litre), many Hulmeians descended from the orange safari bus. To our, surprise the toilet was nothing more than a pit on the ground.
Fast forward three sweaty hours and the group were nearing the end of our journey. The whole group were in euphoria at the beauty around us, goats scavenged and natives cheered the woman selling the mango from a bowl on her head smiled in a jovial manner. A rum sounded, echoes spread around the landscape.
Our final time, we descended from the orange safari bus to the warm embrace of the local children. We walk ceremoniously to our hotel under the watchful eye of the big chief Kofi Yeaboah (John Dalziel).
Our hotel was surprisingly marvellous but the zenith of this luxury was the toilet. While the local school children generously transferred out bags from the bus to the hotel, us Hulmeians scampered to the food hall and destroyed the food before us.
We were assigned to our buddies and left to mingle during the 15 minute walk to the school. Upon our arrival at the centre of education, a mass of 6-9 year old junior school students ran jovially towards us (the most popular being Mr Grant who was accompanied by at least 15 children at all times). We all then had a dance to the music and engaged in a game of football. In this extreme test if athletic ability, Hulme came out on top with a crushing 1-0 victory . Later, all of the project Ghana team met for a Ghanaian assembly/welcome. During this time, we were told a little about the culture and a lot about the good we are doing in the local community, we were then given a soda and journeyed back to the hotel.
Currently the groups are relaxing after a long tiring day.
