Weydon – warm welcome in Dwabor

Partner Schools Worldwide > Weydon and Dwabor JHS > Weydon – warm welcome in Dwabor

Day 3- Eve
Today we were officially welcomed into Dwabor, the whole team woke up early, had breakfast and walked down to the community palace where we introduced ourselves to the elders and watched the dancers. Everywhere we walk we are followed by lots of children the all want to hold our hands. We were shown around the town and told about the project we will be working on over the next week. We started working on the projects today such as painting murals, cementing the round-about and the sea-saw.

Day 4- Max
Sunday started with an early awakening, so that everyone was up and as clean as they could be for breakfast despite the fact that the majority of the team only had two sets of clothes and with all this red dust, the inside-out and back-to-front tricks ceased to work efficiently. After breakfast we had some down time to either go to town or chill out, followed by a traditional church service, where we all split into teams to partake in the community’s different types of ceremonies. My group consisted of myself, Edwin, Monty, Tom and the Grand Wizard, Merlin himself (Sam Jones MBE)
We then had a list of challenges to complete to pass the time, which included Owen chasing and catching a chicken, in which he excelled and showed true professionalism when after a prolonged bout of shouting (from Owen) and screeching (from the chicken), the pair shook hands and exchanged some well played’s. Following the chicken chase, several of us went to pick up some fabric from Ebo the Elder, and then take it to the seamstress so she could make us some of what we like to call Funky Trousers, and so she could make Merlin his magical robe. We are now waiting on dinner and some campfire stories.

Day 5 Tuesday- Owen

Today we woke up and were treated to some delicious omelets for breakfast which we all enjoyed. Afterwards we walked, with the children, to the main school where we were welcomed officially in the eyes of the school. We brought with us some of our donation books to the school. We then got into pairs before reading a selection of the books to each class. Myself and Zack read to the youngest class which was a challenge but we managed and had a lot of fun.

We then resumed our project work repainting the netball posts and painting the urinals and toilets vibrant colours which both looked great by the end of the day. We then had the famous Red-Red for dinner which was lovely before being taught how to make beads in the evening and we all made an assortment of cool bracelets. Overall today was full of new and interesting experiences.

Day 6- Chloe
The morning started early and we were greeted by madam Emma’s banana pancakes. After we ate those we munched on some lovely pineapple- it’s a lot sweeter than back home- and set of for project work. Some were painting and copping boards to make clocks for classrooms (it was quite messy) and others were painting urinal and the schools. There was also people painting netball posts Ghanaian flag colors.
After all that hard work we came back to the site to eat lunch; spaghetti and tomato sauce with a boiled egg. Then it was time to set up for our first aid course. Hansa led the session with her brilliant medical knowledge and then we practiced with the dolls and our buddies. After that we finished off our projects and gathered round the campfire.
