Day 4: Monday 28th March 2016
The start of the day was marked by the scream of a rooster inside the mosque we spent the night in. After this rude awakening we stumbled out of our army tents where veggie omelets and coffee where ready for us. We then met with our buddies and packed 16 people in a ‘tro tro’. After 45 minutes of sweaty traveling we picked up a coca bean farmer and learnt about the life of a coca tree and their care takers. Fun part the pulp surrounding the beans tasted like yogurt.
Soon after this we travelled to Kakum National Park where we started our adventure into the rain forest. About 20 minutes in we encountered a canopy walk bridge consisting of one row of 2×4’s and rope for support. The bridge had breath taking views of the beautiful rain forest but very few of us were able to appreciate this because of how unstable the bridge was swaying in the wind. We all agreed that was enough excitement for one day and decided on something much safer, eating lunch around a small lake home to a significant population of crocodiles. Our lunch consisted of 2 hot dog like things and 2 spring rolls and washed them down with some minerals. We were able to lure one of the crocodiles out with a raw meat and watched him launch out of the water to snag the meat.
We headed back to back to camp site to take bucket of shower in an outdoor shower I know my mum would love. I am writing this right now under our leaf canopy that the locals made for us waiting to take mu bucket shower as the sun begins to set over the African bush just steps from where I am sitting. I, as well as the many children clinging to my legs currently bid you a good night or as we say here ‘da-yie’.
