Firstly we arrived at Weydon at the pitch black time of 5:30. We hopped on two minibuses, heading to Heathrow, after half an hour of bonding; playing an ice breaker game (shoutout to Jess’ mum!) we boarded the plane. A nine hour fight goes as quickly as it can when you have lots of films to watch and sleep to catch up on. At Mumbai we had time to stretch our legs and learnt how to play ‘American Shep Tica’ which gathered an audience. The two hour flight to Colombo was spent sleeping, when we arrived in Colombo we were greeted by Mrs Warnock, Karu and Kate’s uncle aunt and cousins. We sent our bags down to the place where we were staying and set out to Hambantota in a separate vehicle. The first stop was a service station for breakfast. Crackers. Pringles chips and fruit was on the menu. Stop two was a trip to a MoonStone mine and a spice farm within it, we saw locals: mining; polishing and making jewellery to sell. the Jewellery was stunning but sadly too expensive to buy. They showed us where the cinnamon was grown and how they refined and made the cinnamon sticks and essence. On the farm there was also mango, grapefruit and cashew trees. Back on the bus we all slept like logs (especially Trigg!) until we got off to have a proper lunch of short eats (for example samosas). More sleeping on the coach was interrupted by a stop on the beach to watch the fishermen fish suspended on wooden poles. Then onwards to the Janoda foundation building where we all put our camp beds and tents up. Afterward we gratefully showered. It was the most rewarding thing we did in the day. We no longer felt sweaty smelly and tired (for about an hour) we were refreshed, ready for the next days. Supper was a challenging learning curve, we all ate a dhal curry, a spicy spinach curry and rice, with only our right hand! Then after this a well deserved sleep. The only exception was Mr Oliver Trigg who couldn’t make it to dinner hence earning the nickname sleeping ugly! See you tomorrow.
