Day 3
After a lunch of sandwiches we continued to work on our project of smashing up the floor in one of the classrooms. After six hours of hard labour we completed the job having faced multiple challenges and by working together with the children and the rest of the community. For dinner we had Red Red (which is a sort of bean stew mixed with palm oil) and fried plantains, and sat to discuss our days work and the highs and lows of the trip so far, before relaxing and playing with the children and our buddies. The evening started with singing songs with Jasmine’s guitar around a camp fire which turned into a massive party when the locals turn up which had us all doing the Azonto dance to African drums. After dancing and singing for too long we collapsed into our mosquito net exhausted and hot sleeping under the stars for a second night.
Day 4
Having spent longer laughing than sleeping we woke up promising an earlier bed time tonight. We then got up, washed and those who had not experienced the dreaded long drop went, and had breakfast which turned out to be omelette sandwiches along with tea and hot chocolate. We then got ready to go and see the kindergarten graduation at the local church. It started off with lots if singing and dancing then settled down into performances by the children to celebrate their first year at school. It was great to be invited however it went on for slightly longer than expected (3 hours!) we then had pasta salad for lunch and got straight onto our project work of painting, constructing and reflooring the classrooms. We are all thoroughly enjoying ourselves and are settling into life in Ghana, and so far nobody has fallen ill!
Day 5
HELLO 🙂 Catherine and Ed here, just chilling in one of the Ghanian kindergarten classrooms. Today we started the day with a classic scrambled egg on toast, which was delicious, as was last nights dinner: mashed yam and blackeye bean sauce with sausages (our first piece of meat!). In the morning, there was a small shower kerfuffle which involved Mrs Warnock counting down from ten in order to get the boys out of the shower (*coughcough* Matt and Henry). They had to do a walk of shame in just their towels, everyone was laughing, so spirits were high! At about 9:00 our buddies came down so that we could plant two trees together. We liked the ceremony, because it meant you could bond with your buddy, and give a long-lasting gift to the community in which we can be remembered. Also Matt found and picked up a massive beetle, that proceeded to crawl all over him!
