Day 3 Evening and Day 4

After a hard working day with the Ghanaian students painting and working in the classrooms the teachers thought that as a thank you they would take us to the local petrol station where we were to find the Manchester United and Bayern Munich champions league match. Unfortunately Manchester united lost. The atmosphere was amazing, as soon as man united scored everyone went crazy. When we got back we were confused to why the lights wouldn’t turn on, but it turned out that the electricity had gone out. We all got our torches. Luckily the backup generator was turned on quickly and the place was soon cool. Later in the night the generator was turned off and the bedrooms were really really hot.

With a hot and humid night the morning was well underway with a lovely breakfast of oats and Ghana banana. After having all our showers we took a nice stroll to the school. Soon after we arrived there we got split up into two groups. One group painted a masterful mural designed by Jack Girling, which showed the relationship with Elmina and Oakwood Park. Whilst the other was in the classroom with the students. We helped the students learn about British history and the slave trade. The children taught us about Ghanaian history. At lunch time many people went out and played with the school children with a rugby ball.

After we had finished in the school we then took our buddies to the slave forts, where we learnt that only 1 in 3 slaves survived the prison to make the journey to the West Indies. We learnt a lot about the slave trade and how much Elmina affected it. It was very enjoyable. We then went into the gift shop and bought our buddies presents. Once again we had a lovely dinner of yam and palava.
