Today we woke up very early again to get as much of the projects done as possible. For breakfast we had toast and omelette. Our projects consisted of continuing to paint the mural and making the playground in the KG. The work was very tiring. We also began the tree design on the other wall of the Primary block, which we painted colourfully. In the next few days we are hoping to finish the painting by printing our own and our buddies handprints around the branches from the tree.
After lunch, which was spring roll pancakes, we met our buddies and went to Elmina castle. We had a walking tour of the castle by a guide and it was very interesting. The buddies had not been to Elmina before and they seemed to enjoy learning about the history of the area, the slavery and the way male and female slaves were treated by the Governors. After our walking tour we went to some Ghanaian shops and some of us bought trousers and bracelets, for our buddies. Also Prosper gave us our first sweetballs, which were amazing, they’re like a ball of donut.
After Elmina the Ghanaian buddies went back to Ayensudo and we carried on to visit Elmina market and Dwabor, which is the school which previous years have visited. we went to Elmina market quickly, which was mainly food, Musa bought some yams (like a big spikey potato) which Francesca was using as a weapon, also some of us bought machetes. Then we went to Dwabor where we were welcomed very well by all the children and had a quick tour of the town and village. On our way home Isseke ( Lucie’s fiancée!!!!) taught us many sing-along songs and we also all belted out a few musical tunes like High school musical!!
In the evening we met our buddies again and sat around the fire and talked lots about Ghana and the UK. They taught us about Christianity and the Islamic religion, for example my buddy Sherifa told me and Francesca that her dad has more than one wife, although she does not know them, and for Islam this is very normal.
