When our partner students visited us – by Theresah Davis

Partner Schools Worldwide > Kimbolton School and Essaman United JHS > When our partner students visited us – by Theresah Davis

Friday, 29th March 2013 was the day our buddies from the UK- Kimbolton High School came to Ghana. I was very excited when I saw my buddy. She was also very happy to see me. She was very friendly and likes smilling to everyone. She was playing with the younger kids in my school and taking pictures too. She loves chocolate, cakes and she appreciates everything she is given. Sometimes she talks too much instead of paying attention though! Apart from that, I like all her behaviours and she is a good friend.

During the visit of our buddies, we went to so many places but the most interesting place was our visit to the Cocoa farm at “Atobiase”. It was quite far and when we got there, we learnt about so many things about cocoa. After the the lecture about cocoa, we were also asked to examine how the cocoa beans taste when they are fresh. After that we were asked to plug one each and bring it home with us. I learnt that Tetteh Quashie was the one who first brought cocoa into Ghana in the year 1898. There are two types of cocoa: Amazonia and Amelonado and together they are called ‘hybrid’. Also the scientific name of Cocoa is Theobroma Cacao, it mainly propagated by the seeds. The diseases that affect cocoa are known as ‘black pod’ and ‘swollen shoot’. There are some pesst that feed on the cocoa called a capsid. Cocoa is so important and has many uses – it is used to make ‘Milo’ chocolate beverages, the leaves have medical uses and it can also be used for making pomade.

In summary, the visit was very fruitful and educational. It is my wish that this programm will continue because it has really helped me improve my studies.
