Day-9 13th July 2018
The day started with a familiar issue, there was no water for showers. This, however was due to storms during the night disrupting the pipes bringing water out of Accra. Since it was Sunday our buddies took us to their respective churches. This resulted in a mixed experience for all involved, some people manged to attend the express 20 minute service however, James and Max spent 2 hours and 30 minutes in church studying the Bible, singing, dancing and even preaching. Once everyone had returned from church we had lunch and set out for Elmina Castle. Elmina Castle is a huge imposing structure overlooking the town. The castle had been used by the Portuguese and Dutch in the slave trade. The group were horrified to learn how 1000 people would be crammed into dungeons to be held for months in wait for the ships that would transport them across the Atlantic. It was a stark reminder how only a few hundred years ago the British Empire had been the cause of such suffering. The trip concluded with a mandatory trip to market stalls where James bought some rather questionable art. The day ended on a high as we returned to camp with running water.
