DAY 10 – TUESDAY, 14TH JULY 2015
Breakfast was pancakes at 7am as usual. Todays’ jobs were cleaning, painting and getting water for the cement, mixing and cleaning. The painting was mostly of pictures and educational things. The painting was excellent, lots of colorful pictures of animals among educational drawings like number scales and the alphabets. After those jobs were done people mostly chilled out. For lunch it was spaghetti with vegetable sauce made by Prince. For tea it was rice with sauce and fish.
DAY 11 – WEDNESDY, 15TH JULY 2015
Todays’ breakfast was eggy toast. The day overall was incredibly proactive. Both the girls and the boys came together to make a lot of headway on the waterfall/second kindergarten room. the room now is almost completed and is really colourful and child friendly. For lunch we had a bean and rice dish which everyone wolfed down. We showed the PTA our Project work and I think people felt proud and quite achieved. Mine and liv
DAY 13 – FRIDAY, 17TH JULY 2015
Breakfast was porridge and toast. Lunch was Sandwich and Dinner was rice and palaver sauce. We started off the day with a wonderful sports day for the kindergarten. It was chaotic but very fun, we did egg and spoon race, running and three legged, however there was a lots of cheaters. Next we played a huge game of rounders’ with the older children, they had never played before but they were surprisingly good. It was a great but sweaty game but we came out with a victory. After a fun day of sports we had some time to relax and escape to a book, but we were all in high spirits as the project work was complete. We were all so proud of our murals on the kindergarten wall as well as fixing and painting the desks, it was a great day.
DAY 14- SATURDAY, 18TH JULY 2015
This morning we had vegetable omelet and toast for breakfast which I thought was really nice. Then we had choir practice and did two songs: the Lord’s Prayer (part of it) and a country song in parts. We sang them in church this morning after Daniel presented us with a plague, Mrs. Russell with a dress and all of us with certificates and scarfs with “well done” and our names on. They are blue with gold writing and the Ghanaian flag colours. Lots of people came to church to thank us for our work. After church, the chief of Kwahu Tafo came to the school and I showed him the class rooms that we’ve painted – the waterfall and Noah’s ark – and the library. We had pasta salad and bread for lunch and played with some children who came to school, read or went to town afterwards. We had the afternoon to ourselves and a lot of our buddies were there. We had a buffet for dinner with all different types of rice and our buddies, the teachers and all of the children at school ate with us. Daniel thanked us again and played some music. He was shouting things into the microphone. Afterwards we walked down to the chief’s Palace so Mr. Dalziel could be given the title of Nana (Chief) of finance. There was a lots of drumming and there was a man dancing to it. Mr. Dalziel was dressed in a toga and lifted on to a man’s shoulders and had talcum powder thrown on him. He was carried around the town on the man’s shoulders with all of us following. As we followed, there was a man running round throwing talk on us. Prince told me it means victory; we were all covered in it. When we got back to the palace, the chief made Mr. Dalziel swear an oath that anytime they call, whatever time, he has to pick up unless he’s sick or dead. He can also ask what happens to money. If he neglects his responsibilities or doesn’t do it,he’ll be beheaded. I think it’s another way for them to thank us because it’s an honour. We were also given necklaces as a thank you. It’s sad we were nearly leaving but it was a really good day.
DAY 15 – SUNDAY, 19TH JULY 2015
Today was the last full day at Kwahu Tafo and the SDA School. Early morning we collected our water from the pump tap for our ‘showers’ to wake us up and clean ourselves. The rest of the day was lassie faire until our last supper with all the chiefs of the town and our buddies. We ate like chiefs; chicken, fish, rice, salad, you name it. It was very sad as the night came close and Dutch and Mr. Dalziel said their final words. I gave Phillip (my buddy) his gifts while he showed me pictures of his family. It was a joyous and sad night all in one and the SDA high School will be thoroughly missed.
DAY 16 – MONDAY, 20TH JULY 2015
Today was an early start as it was a travel day and we needed to make a clean getaway. It was very emotional leaving our new friends behind but at the same time it was exciting as we were beginning the second part of our trip. The road was bumpy and the journey was long. Arriving at Roots yard to a handmade chocolate cake has to be one of the highlights of the trip. Not long after tea we all departed to our rooms after a very long and tiring day.
DAY 17 – TUESDAY, 21ST JULY 2015
This day began with our earliest wakeup to date, some of the group needing to be up at 5:00 am. , with the thought of trying to climb Mt. Afadjato earlier on in the day, to avoid the midday heat. After a 4 hour truck journey along some of the worst roads the drivers had ever seen, we arrived at the base of the mountain, and just our luck as we wre all setting off, the heavens opened and the rains came in. the climb itself was tricky in places due to slippery conditions and the lack of hand ropes. Frequent stops were definitely needed on our way up. Once we reached the summit after 1.5 hours, (885m up!) we took some pictures and a well earned rest before starting our descent again. We then hopped back in the trucks for another our reach for our second excursion, the wli falls. We jumped out and made our way through the dense rainforest, and after an hour we reached the highest waterfall in this part of west Africa. So we all enjoyed a well earned wash under this towering wall of water. Soon after we were rushed back again into the trucks for another 2 hours. Our final activity for the day was the Tafi Atome monkey sanctuary. So we were all given a few bananas to go and give these wild, but very wise monkeys. Some just took them from your hand when you weren’t looking, and others actually jumpedthem onto our backs in order to get the food. This day was by far the longest on yhe trip, but in my opinion was also the most enjoyable.
DAY 18 – WEDNESDAY, 22 JULY 2015
Today we tarvelled from Roots Yard in Peki to Stumble Inn in Elmina. I t was too long journey of 6 hours where we travelled through Accra the capital of Ghana. During our journey some of us travelled on the blue truck where we had the oppurtunity to smell and hear all the features of Ghana. And some of us to travlled in the mini bus. The people at the mini bus shoped for food at the bakery for Holly’s birthday. And it was Holly’s birthday we all had potato chips, chicken and salad from the Stumble Inn.
When we arrived at Stumble Inn we were all really happy. It is located by the beach and surronded by palm tree, little shops, a bar and a little hut house in which Helen is staying in one. After we pull our bags in our room we went down to the beach were we paddled in the water as the ……. go beyound our knees as the water is too rough to swim. After dinner some of us had a fire by the beach. After the days event we were all tired and went to bed in our bunk beds.
