Weydon – Dwabor Student Visit 2013 – Days 1 and 2

Partner Schools Worldwide > Weydon and Dwabor JHS > Weydon – Dwabor Student Visit 2013 – Days 1 and 2

Day 1

After a long and tiring journey, we finally arrived in Accra. We were all very tired and hungry from both the excitement of the upcoming visit, and the limited food at the airport in Lisbon!

Stepping out of the plane, the humidity was a real shock and everything smelt very different to in England. We waited in the queue for about 40 minutes before collecting our baggage and changing our money for cedis (the Ghanaian currency).

On our way out of the airport, lots of people offered to carry our bags, and were telling us ‘how beautiful’ they thought we are!

We then loaded our baggage on to the ex-army truck that will stay with us for the duration of our trip, and set off for the guest house in Accra.

We arrived at the hostel in the late evening, found our rooms which were mostly all double beds so Peter was a lucky lad (Harry writing), had a refreshing shower and clambered in to bed.

Day 2

The chickens woke up around 5 and we left at 6. After a 5 hour journey on the truck, stopping off at various markets on the way in order to stock up on supplies, we finally reached the road approaching the school. The students went mad, shouting and waving with excitement.

When the truck pulled into the school, we unloaded our bags and the students were very keen to help us, carrying equipment and luggage in between hugs and handshakes.

We were astonished by the amount of children who wanted to hold our hands and play with us, and were completely overwhelmed by their willingness to help and accommodate us.

Settling down into our new home (for the next three weeks!), we began to put up our camp beds and mosquito nets. We were completely bombarded by students wanting to do it for us, and others wanting to show us their school. They are obviously very proud and feel privileged to be able to go to school, which was very touching.

Once we had assembled our beds, we were introduced to lots of the students and teachers, and had lots of free time to relax and play with them. To Lucy’s delight, there were lots of children wanting to show her their cartwheels, and they were mesmerised by the acrobatic tricks she showed them!

After an enjoyable afternoon at the school, some of the team were invited into the village by their new friends, who were all keen to invite them to their homes. Everything is really good! We are all loving it 🙂 and we will have others blogging soon!

Lucy and Harry. Love goes out to the fams xxxxxx
