Day 9
Today, we worked on the playground in the morning and completed the construction of the monkey bars and seesaw. All that is left for us to do now is the painting of the play area.
After the usual sweaty walk and a delicious lunch of ‘Red Red’ (spicy, tomatoey, bean stew with fried plantain), we were split up into two teams for the construction of the chicken coop and to plan the kindergarten arts and crafts day – which we will attempt to run with over excited children tomorrow.
Fun fact of the day: Dan received ten ‘mangoes’ from his buddy, which turned out to be oranges which tasted like grapefruit… mysterious…
Day 10
We were all up early, looking forward to running the KG arts and crafts day. We wondered down to the school on the beach to find a seemingly infinite number of small children waving at us expectantly. They were divided into 5 groups each doing a different activity – bracelet making, sand drawing, butterfly painting and crafting hands and faces. All was going well until 20 minutes in and the groups were to switch. The system broke down, chaos ensued and society as we know it came to an end. However, the kids still managed to be creative and seemed to enjoy the day. Tasha later found out to her detriment that some were having a little too much fun when a small boy thought it would be hilarious to pee on her! Tasha was not amused.
After the morning drama, we had a restful afternoon of washing and reading followed by an interesting dinner, including ground nut soup and fish heads, an experience which the majority do not want to repeat!
Fun fact of the day: A chicken caused chaos during dinner when it leapt into a bush near the eating circle prompting comments of ‘Don’t go near it, it’s a vulture!’ and Frankie Howland falling up the stairs.
Day 11
Day 11 was a day worth living for. We made great progress on the farm and virtually completed the painting of the playground. We had an entertaining afternoon on the beach with Rasta Kobi drumming and dancing – some with more skill than others.
We returned to camp and spent the evening doing our best karaoke – High School Musical, S Club 7 and Blue all being favourites. At our daily meeting, we made the decision to stay in Brenu at the beach resort on the last night rather than Stumble Inn so we could spend a maximum amount of time with our buddies and friends in the community.
